Here Are My Top 5 Tips On What To Wear For Your Maternity Session
I was asked, “What do you think is the most flattering outfit to photograph for maternity sessions?”, so I decided to write a blog post exactly about that! As an insiders scoop, the number one rule during a Maternity session with me is that – there must always be at least one hand on the baby bump, at all times! Because we want to show how excited you are for your bundle of joy to make their appearance, and to show the love you have for them through these first memory keepsakes. If you’re planning a session and still thinking about what to wear, I hope these few tips help make your decision a little bit easier!
1. For an outdoor session.
A majority of my maternity sessions are outdoors, so it is good to keep in mind the weather/season when it comes to choosing your outfits. A long dress gives length to your body and is universally flattering to women of all heights. Bonus: Having the extra fabric flow on the ground gives the photos such an elevated look!
2. For an indoor session.
If you are wanting an in-home session, you can go a couple ways with your wardrobe. A gown is still always a good choice, but there is also a couple other directions you could go being in the comfort of your home. You could wear more intimate clothing and maybe show off your bare belly bump. I would suggest soft, comfy pajamas – pants or shorts, paired with a tank. If you really want to be casual maternity jeans are also a sweet in-home style for the session. If you’re wanting a more romantic touch, something like a lace robe or cozy cardigan with pretty underwear would be elegant.
3. Let’s talk shoes.
With an indoor session, there is always the option to go bare footed. If your dress hits the floor, shoes won’t show so I would suggest wearing a comfortable, neutral flat if we are outdoors! If you’re wanting to add some height with a heel, that’s fine! Just bring a comfy pair of shoes to your outdoor session, so walking to our location isn’t uncomfortable for you. Once we get to our spot you can put the heels on and stash the flats until we need to walk again.
4. Choose solid colors or subtle patterns when choosing your outfit.
Loud colors and patterns can be distracting, and maternity sessions are all about the belly! Our goal is to highlight that gorgeous new mama glow, and to showcase that beautiful bump.
5. Texture can really add a special touch to your portraits.
Lace, knits, sheer fabrics, etc. can take your look to a whole other level! Think classic, not trendy when it comes to your clothing choices. You never want your pictures to go out of style! Some of my favorite places to buy maternity dresses are Pink Blush Maternity, Hatch, and Asos.
